These are the 15 Presidents of India who have held the post of President of India so far. The post was established when India was declared a republic with the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. Apart from these fifteen Presidents, there are also three such persons. Who have held the post for a short period of time. who is known as the acting president. Their names are as follows –

Dr. Shri Rajendra Prasad was the first president of India. He held the office in 1950 and he is the only person to have held office for two terms. Whereas presently Sushri Droupadi Murmu is the President of India. She took office as the 15th president of India and became the second woman and the first tribal person to hold the office.
Acting President of India
The concept of the acting President of India come as per article 65 of the Indian Constitution. The article 65 says that the Vice-President of India has to act as the President and to discharge his functions during casual vacancies in the office by the reason of the death of sitting President, resignation of the sitting President, or removal of President.
In simple word we can say that an acting president is a person who temporarily fills the role of a country’s president when the incumbent president is unavailable in the office due to illness, sudden death, resignation or impeachment.
Shri V. V. Giri
The full name of Shri V.V.Giri is “Varahagiri Venkata Giri”. Shri V.V.Giri had became the 3rd Vice President of India on 13 May 1967 and he took charge as the Acting President for the office of the President of India on 03 May 1969 due to the sudden death of Shri Zakir Husain, the sitting President of India.
Shri Mohammad Hidayatullah
Shri Mohammad Hidayatullah was served as the 11th Chief Justice of India from 25 February 1968 to 16 December 1970. He had also served as the acting president of India for so many times like –
* from 20 July 1969 to 24 August 1969,
* from 6 October 1982 to 31 October 1982
* two times in the tenor of President Gyani Zail Singh, when he had goes to US for medical treatment and he was the vice President of India.
He served as the sixth vice president of India, serving from 31 August 1979 to 30 August 1984.
Shri B. D. Jatti
The full name of Shri B. D. Jatti was “Basappa Danappa Jatti”. He served as the fifth vice president of India, serving from 1974 to 1979. He served as the acting president of India from 11 February 1977 to 25 July 1977 due to sudden death of the sitting President of India Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on 11 February 1977. Before became the vice President of India he also served as the chief minister of Karnataka.

As we know that India called “Republic” on 26 January 1950 when we adopted the our Constitution and the post of the head of the state called “The President of India” established. And there have been 15 Presidents of India elected for this post so for yet. Dr. Shir Rajendra Prasad was became the first President of India and Sushri Droupadi Murmu is the sitting President of India.
