A United Kingdom based health charity “Encephalitis International” has launched a global campaign for the prevention from Encephalitis. The campaign is titled as “Preventing Future Encephalitis – Climate Change and Infectious Disease”. This campaign is launched to raise awareness about encephalitis and promote vaccination.

Encephalitis is the caused by infections or autoimmune responses which effects inflammation of active brain tissues. More than 1.5 million people globally every year affecting by this disses. The campaign highlights how climate change increases encephalitis risk by creating conditions for disease-carrying vectors like mosquitoes and ticks to spread.
India is also among high-burden countries affected by Encephalitis. In the year 2024 there were 1548 cases encephalitis reported.

Encephalitis is inflammation of the active tissues of the brain caused by an infection or an autoimmune response.

The press release also said that nearly 77 per cent of the population globally does not aware about the conditions of the Encephalitis, resulted there is a delay in diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Ava Easton, Chief Executive of Encephalitis International said that “As the earth warms the new and emerging infections, including those who are responsible to spread Encephalitis, will continue to rise the vectors that can spread infectious diseases.
Director-General of WHO Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus quoted in a press release that “Vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives over the past five decades”. The outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases like Measles, Meningitis and Encephalitis are increasing globally and the diseases like diphtheria which was well-controlled, are also at risk of re-emerging. He show his wariness about the outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases globally which are responsible to putting lives at risk and exposing countries to increased treatment costs.
India’s Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP)
India’s Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) is one of the largest immunisation programme in the world. The immunisation programme provides free vaccination against 12 diseases, including Encephalitis. In a press release it is pointed that the annual target of this immunisation programme is 27 million infants and 30 million pregnant women.
Cases of Encephalitis in India
As the press release in the year 2024 India reported 1548 cases of encephalitis in 24 states and union territories which underscoring the scale of the challenge.
