Why Bharat Ratna award not given to Mahatma Gandhi?

- The Bharat Ratna Awardees cannot be used as a prefix or suffix in their names, as they cannot identify themselves as “Bharat Ratna Awardees by the President of India” or “Bharat Ratna Awardees”.
- The award does not carry any monetary benefits, but the award includes the following entitlements –
1) The medallion and miniature
2) A Sanad (certificate) signed by the President of India
3) Treatment as a state guest by state governments when traveling within a state
4) Treated as the national guest for Indian missions for abroad
5) Entitlement for a diplomatic passport
6) Placed seventh in the Indian order of precedence
7) Lifetime free access to fly in the executive class in the national air and train carrier.
