Annalena Baerbock elected President of the 80th General Assembly

Recently on 2 June, 2025 Annalena Baerbock elected as the President of 80th session of General Assembly of United Nation’s. She was the former Foreign Minister of Germany. the age of Ms. Annalena Beaebock is about 44 year and became the first youngest leader to hold the post. The contest has been done between Annalena Baerbock and Helga Schmid. Both the candidate was from Germany. Ms. Baerbock received 167 votes and Helga received only seven votes. Wheras Fourteen delegations abstained.

There have been five women who have served as President of the UN General Assembly. These are –
01) Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit from India – became the president in 1953 for its 8th session.
02) Angie Brooks from Liberia – became the president in 1969 for its 24th session.
03) Haya Rashed Al-Khalifa from Bahrain – became president in 2006 for its 61st session.
04) María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés from Ecuador – became president in 2018 for its 73rd session.
05) Annalena Baerbock from Germany – current president for its 80th session.

– The president of UNGA is the presiding officer of the General Assembly and the president of the United Nations General Assembly is a elected by the representatives in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a yearly basis through the secret ballot .
– The presidency rotates annually between the five geographic groups – African, Asia-Pacific,
Eastern European, Latin American and Caribbean and Western European and other States
– It is notable that some of the largest, most powerful countries have never held the presidency, including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Japan because of their powerful stature globally.
– Few of the countries had a national elected as president of UNGA twice. They are Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Hungary and Nigeria.
– There are total 193 member countries of the UN General Assembly.
– The first session of the UN General Assembly was convened on 10 January 1946 in the Methodist Central Hall in London and included representatives of 51 nations.
– The headquarter of United Nations located in New York City.
