This launch will be with an objective to ensure that the food storage depots meet the highest quality standards and performance.
What is Depot Darpan?
Depot Darpan is a digital monitoring portal and mobile app that enables the depot managers for real-time oversight of food grain depots using geo-tagged data, IoT, and AI technologies.

To digitize and modernize the infrastructure of the country’s food storage system by using the latest technology and take one more step ahead through scientific warehousing, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and food safety.
Key Features of Depot Darpan Portal –
– This portal is an initiative of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India.
– Depot Darpan is conceived by the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD).
– Depot Darpan will digitize the operations of 2,278 grain depots managed by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), and various state agencies.
Objective behind to launch Depot Darpan –
– To ensure that the food storage depots have met the highest quality and performance standards.
– To enable the depot managers to evaluate infrastructure, operational, and financial performance on a near real-time basis.
– The Depot Managers can upload geo-tagged inputs of the infrastructure available in their depot for generating automated ratings and action points for timely improvements.
– The system ensures 100% validation by the supervisory officers and random third-party audits.
Categories of the warehouses –
There are two categories for the purpose of assessment –
01) Infrastructural aspects – which include safety standards, storage conditions, environmental, technology adoption, and statutory parameters.
02) Operational efficiency aspects – which include stock turnover, losses, space utilization, manpower expenses, and profitability.
– Each category will be evaluated independently, and the warehouse receives a star rating based on the composite scoring from both parameters.
– Depot Darpan will uniquely integrated with smart warehousing technologies, creating a seamless digital monitoring ecosystem that includes – CCTV Surveillance and IoT sensors.
The IoT-Enabled Monitoring includes –
01) Ambient sensor – To monitor temperature and relative humidity and grain moisture and temperature.
02) Carbon dioxide (CO2) – To monitor and indicate potential grain infestation.
03) Phosphine gas sensor – Ensures occupational safety for workers through early warning to prevent exposure to toxic gas levels.
04) Detects fumigation leakages and increasing effectiveness of treatment.
05) Gate Shutter sensor – Detection of unauthorized door access. Alerts for unauthorized door openings outside designated hours and also monitors door status during fumigation processes.
06) To ensures the proper ventilation by tracking door openings as required.
07) Fire/smoke sensor – Provides early warning to prevent fire-related damage and ensure safety.
08) In addition, AI-based technology for bag counting, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) for vehicle identification and tracking, and Face Recognition technology (FRS) for access control and security are also deployed in warehouses on a pilot basis.
The Depot Darpan mobile app will allow supervisory officials to track warehouse performance in real-time, helping them make informed decisions and drive continuous improvements through automated reports.
Significance of the Depot Darpan App –
01) Enhances Food Security – To ensures the quality storage for food grains to be distributed to over 80 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
02) Enhanced the Efficiency – The portal may be helpful to reduces wastage, improves turnover, and optimizes storage space and manpower use.
03) Supports the Digital Governance -This portal can give Strengthen the India’s digital public infrastructure in the logistics and supply chain sector.
