HPPSC HPAS Syllabus – HPPSC (Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service Syllabus is designed as per the notification for the recruitment for the Himachal Pradesh Administration Service a prestigious post conducted by Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC). HPAS Syllabus – Syllabus for the examination and pattern of the examination for Himachal Pradesh Administrative Services conducted by  Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) The HPPSC is organizing a Combined Competitive Examination in 3 stages 1 – Preliminary Examination 2 –  Main Examination 3 – Interview We are providing the detailed syllabus for the examination for both for HPAS examination.

Syllabus for HPAS Preliminary Exam

HPPSC HPAS preliminary examination is a screening test in the nature of. qualifying examination and the marks obtained by the successful candidates are not counted for the final merit list. The aim of the examination to filter out the under-prepared candidates and cut down the number for candidates for the Main examination. The pattern of the preliminary examination is purely objective type examination (MCQ Type) and the candidates needs to secure higher than the HPPSC cut-off marks to qualify for the next level examination. In the HPAS Preliminary examination is included two papers 1- General Studies 2 – Aptitude Test. The topic-wise syllabus for both the papers are as follows

General Studies Syllabus

The syllabus for the subject of General Studies is a combination on the topics of current affairs and the General Knowledge. The HPPSC HPAS prelims examination syllabus is available on the official website with the latest official notification link is provided is here under and the topics are as follows

  • History, geography, political, art & culture and socio-economic development of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Currents events of national and international importance.
  • History of India and Indian national movement.
  • Indian and World Geography-physical, social, economic geography of India and the world.
  • Indian polity and governance –Constitution, political system, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and social development –sustainable development poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives, etc.  
  • General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and Climate Change –that do not require subject specialization 
  • General Science.

Aptitude Test Syllabus

The aim of the Aptitude Test paper is to test the orientation of the candidates. This Aptitude Test Paper was introduces in HPAS after the CSAT Paper introduced in IAS Prelims exams by UPSC. The topics of the syllabus are as follows.

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability 
  • Decision making and problem-solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (up to syllabus of Class X level).),
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. (up to syllabus of Class X level).
  • English Language comprehension skills (up to syllabus of Class X level).

Main Examination

Candidates how are declare qualified in the HPAS Preliminary exam as the norms set by the HPPSC are eligible to take the Main Examination of HPAS. There are two subjects in this Mains Paper. The Mains paper is design as Descriptive Type in nature.

Compulsory Subject and Optional Subject


The Candidates will be required to answer the questions in English. This paper is designed to test the candidate’s understanding of English language and usage of the meaningful words in given topic.

Some of the questions will be based on to test the candidate’s reasoning power, the candidate’s
capacity to understand the implications of the given situation and the candidate’s ability to distinguish importance between the highly important and less important situations etc. This paper is designed with an objective to test candidates in the field of given points – Comprehension of English Language, Correct grammatical expression, and Clarity and precision in expression

Areas of Testing
Candidates will be tested in the following areas:

Letter / Application / Report / Note writing

04Comprehension of unseen passages20 Marks
05Precis Writing 20 Marks

(i) Translation of an English passage into Hindi
(ii) Explanation of Hindi passage in Prose and Poetry in the same language
(iii) Composition (idiom, corrections, etc.).

Knowledge of current events of national and international importance and of such matter of every
day observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions on Modern History (From 1857 onwards) of India. Indian Culture, Indian Policy, Indian economy and Geography of India of such nature as candidates should be able to answer without special study and question on the teaching of Mahatma Gandhi.

The objective of this paper is designed to test candidate’s (i) knowledge / awareness of a variety
of subjects and (ii) their ability to compose a sustained piece of writing in the form of an essay.
Contents: A fair choice of topics covering (i) current affairs (ii) socio-political issues (iii)
aspects of culture and history, and (iv) reflective topics will be given to test the candidates’
understanding of these issues and their flair for expressing themselves in the English language.
Areas of Testing through this paper:
This paper would test the Ability to compose a well-argued piece of writing, Ability to express coherently and sequentially, Awareness of the subject chosen
Evaluation & Marking:
Credit will be given for the observing established rules and format for essay writing, Grammatical correctness of expression, Originality of thought and expression.
